CONNECTING THE CLASSROOM TO POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION AND CAREERS

3 credits; 45 hours - Class Website - www.teachersmarts.com/classroom/

Objective: The objective of this on-line course is to enable the classroom teacher to connect educational concepts and activities to the post-secondary education and careers.  

 

Goal: This course will answer the students' questions: 
  • Why am I learning this? 
  • How will I use it? 
  • Is this career for me? 
  • Where do I go for post-secondary learning? 
  • What do I do with this college major?

 

CDOS Standards: This course meets the New York State Career Development and Occupational Standards: 
  • #1  Career Development:  Students will be knowledgeable about the world of work.
  • #2  Integrated Learning:  Students will demonstrate how academic knowledge and skills are applied in the workplace and other settings.
  • #3a Universal Foundation skills:  Students will demonstrate mastery of the foundation skills and competencies essential for success in the workplace. 

 

Learning Activities: The teacher will:
  • Learn how to connect the curriculum to college majors and careers.
  • Apply basic self-assessment tools to match a student's interests to specific college majors within this academic discipline.
  • Create a college/career-related media presentation to be used in the classroom.
  • Conduct on-line communications with college educators for the purpose of establishing connections for classroom speakers.
Resources:

 

Assignments: The teacher will:
  1. Create an instructional lesson for self-assessment of students' interests and the application of such interests to college majors.
  2. Create a "Curriculum/Career Map" for his/her specified curriculum.
  3. Create a media presentation highlighting post-secondary institutions at which their students may pursue a college major related to this discipline.

 

Group Discussion: The teacher will:
  • Be given the opportunity to discuss the above concepts with other teachers via a discussion board.
  • Be given the opportunity to share the created materials with all the other class members.

 

  This course is offered through the Smithtown Teacher's Center.
